The City of Beacon (Click Here to see an image of an old map of Beacon...date unknown)
The city was incorporated in 1913 by combining the Villages of Fishkill Landing and Matteawan, were settle around 1709 and named for the signal fires the patriots used on top of Mt. Beacon to warn the Continental Army about the movements of the British troops during the Revolutionary War.
At one time, during the 1800s the area was know as the “The Hat Making Capital”.
Nestled between the majestic Hudson Highlands and Hudson River, the City of Beacon is being reborn. Building on its industrial past, Beacon is emerging as a gateway to the recreational and cultural pleasures of the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Conveniently located 60 miles north of New York City and 80 miles south of Albany, Beacon offers something for everyone. Come enjoy the arts, the outdoors, and our antique shops, boutiques and fine restaurants.
Beacon is a fine old city in the midst of a renaissance. While you are here perhaps you’ll chance upon some of our works in progress including a ferry dock near Riverfront Park, and Beacon Landing, a unique blend of public parkland and mixed-used development exemplifying sustainable design principles.
